Your first 3D model in three minutes: a walkthrough with a stopwatch

From a blank chat to an STL in the slicer, timed step by step on a phone. What to type, what to check, what to change, and where the three minutes actually go.

The part

A stand for the phone in your hand, because you can measure it without getting up. Mine is 78 mm wide with the case on; yours will differ. Everything below was done on the phone in Safari, stopwatch running.

0:00 to 0:40: measure and type

Width of the phone with its case (78 mm). Where the charging cable goes (bottom, centred). How steep you like it (about 60 degrees). That is the whole spec.

0:40 to 1:00: the render

The model appears on a virtual print bed with its outside dimensions and volume underneath. A short summary lists what the AI decided for you: an 80 mm cradle (78 plus a millimetre each side), 3 mm walls, a 90 mm deep base for stability, the cable slot 12 mm wide and running through the base. If you had not mentioned the lip, it would have added one anyway.

1:00 to 1:40: look, then change one thing

Orbit with a finger. The lip looks low: the phone would slide out with a thick case. Type:

Lip 5 mm tall and round all the edges.

Ten seconds later the lip is 5 mm and the edges have a 2 mm fillet. The previous version shows as a faint ghost, so you can see that only the lip and the edges moved and the slot did not.

This is the part that people do not expect. There is no undo-the-sketch, no feature tree. You say what is wrong and it is fixed, and the fix does not disturb the rest.

1:40 to 2:10: check the numbers

Tap the front face and the readout shows its height; tap the slot and it shows 12 mm. The dimensions panel lists every number the model is built from (width, angle, slot, wall, lip) in case you want to type one directly instead of asking. Total footprint is 80 x 92 x 96 mm, which fits any bed.

2:10 to 2:40: download

Download as 3MF (it carries the millimetre unit and the name) or STL. On a phone the file lands in Files or Downloads. From there it goes wherever your slicer lives: AirDrop or a shared folder to the computer, or straight to the slicer app if you use one. The phone to slicer guide covers each route.

The download is the only step that costs anything: 10 credits from a Maker or Pro plan. Everything before it was free, and if the printed stand is a shade tight for the case, "1 mm wider cradle" re-downloads free.

2:40 to 3:00: slicer

Drop the file on the bed, default profile, no supports needed because the AI kept the overhangs under 45 degrees and put the flat base down. Print time is about an hour and a half at 0.2 mm.
