SpeakCAD vs Backflip AI: describe a new part, or rebuild an existing one as CAD

Backflip, from a team with a background in carbon-fibre 3D printing, trains a foundation model for CAD. Its tools reverse-engineer things that already exist: a 3D scan or mesh, a few photos with one known dimension, or an engineering drawing becomes a parametric model with a feature tree (in its web app or its Autodesk Fusion add-in) or a STEP file. SpeakCAD starts from a description of the part you want to print, and ends with an STL, a 3MF or G-code.

Reverse engineering or describing

Backflip is built for an engineer who has a thing and needs its CAD: a scan of a casting, a drawing from a 1990s archive, a part on the bench photographed with a known dimension. The result is the feature tree they would have modelled by hand, ready to finish in Fusion, or a STEP file for manufacturing.

SpeakCAD is built for someone who needs a printed part and does not use CAD at all. You describe it with the numbers you measured, the AI writes a parametric OpenSCAD program, and the output is a file for the slicer or already sliced G-code.

Where Backflip wins

  • Scan to CAD with a real feature tree. A mesh becomes sketches, constraints and features, not a rebuilt approximation.
  • STEP and native CAD for machining, sheet metal and assemblies in professional software.
  • Engineering drawings to 3D, which SpeakCAD does not do.
  • It lives inside Fusion if that is where you already work.

Where SpeakCAD wins

  • No CAD needed at any step. Describe, check, change by chat, download.
  • The phone. The whole editor runs in a phone browser.
  • Printing. Print rules are applied by default, Fit Check calibrates fits to your printer, and G-code is sliced with official profiles for 380+ printers.
  • Cost for occasional parts. Starter credits are $5 once for 75 credits, no subscription.

Copying a broken part

Both can start from photos. Backflip's Photo-to-CAD gives an engineer a CAD model to finish. SpeakCAD's duplicate flow (two photos and a ruler) gives a printable file directly, and you correct any dimension by chat.
