Claude connector for 3D printing

Design 3D printable parts in Claude, with the part in 3D in the conversation

SpeakCAD for Claude is a 3D printing connector. Claude works out what the part needs and hands the description to SpeakCAD's own CAD AI; the part appears in 3D right in the conversation, with its dimensions as number fields, and you download a print-ready STL or 3MF, or G-code sliced for your printer (380+ printers). It works on claude.ai, in Claude Desktop and the phone apps, and in Claude Code, on your SpeakCAD account exactly as on the site.
How it works

From a conversation to a part on the print bed

Five steps, the first two once. The setup, click by click, is in the SpeakCAD in Claude guide.
1

Add the connector

On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Customize, then Connectors, and search for SpeakCAD. If only SpeakCAD Slicer comes up, press +, Add custom connector, name it SpeakCAD and paste https://speakcad.com/api/mcp. The Add SpeakCAD to Claude button on this page opens that dialog already filled in. No client ID or secret.
2

Sign in with your SpeakCAD account

Press Connect, sign in on SpeakCAD's page (or create the account there) and press Allow. Parts are saved in your account and paid with its credits: add Starter credits ($5 once, 50 credits) or a plan before the first one.
3

Ask for the part

In a chat, check in the + menu, Connectors, that SpeakCAD is on, then describe the part with its measurements, or let Claude ask you what it needs first.
4

See it in 3D and adjust it

The SpeakCAD card shows the part in 3D one to two minutes later, with its size and named dimensions. Type a new value (free, a new version) or ask for a change in words (2 credits).
5

Download the file or the G-code

STL or 3MF (10 credits), or name your printer and slice it in the card with its OrcaSlicer profile (5 credits more, included in Pro and Unlimited).

What you can ask

SpeakCAD is for functional parts with real measurements: enclosures for a PCB or a Raspberry Pi, brackets, wall mounts, holders, adapters, organizers, replacement clips and knobs. Requests that work as they are:

  • “Use SpeakCAD to design a wall mount for my Wi-Fi router: it is 180 x 120 x 35 mm, the cables come out of the back, and it hangs on two screws 100 mm apart.”
  • “Design a case for a Raspberry Pi 5 with SpeakCAD: 2 mm walls, a 30 mm fan cutout in the lid, openings for the USB-C, both micro-HDMI and the Ethernet port, and four rubber feet pockets.”
  • “I need a hook for a 40 mm round pipe that holds a 2 kg bag. Ask me what you need to know, then design it with SpeakCAD.”
  • “Make the walls 3 mm and add a 5 mm hole in the centre of the lid.”
  • “Slice it for my Bambu Lab A1 in PETG, 0.2 mm layers, 30% infill.”

Good requests share three things: measurements in millimetres, what the part fits or holds, and how it attaches. How to describe a part has templates.

The part in the conversation

Claude renders interactive tools, and SpeakCAD uses that: while the part is designed, a card shows "SpeakCAD is designing your part…", then the part in 3D with its size and version. In the card you can:

  • Type new dimensions (wall thickness, width, hole diameter…) and apply them: no AI, no credits, a new version.
  • Ask for a change in words, in the card or in the chat (2 credits, included in Unlimited).
  • Download STL or 3MF, a link valid 24 hours.
  • Slice it for your printer, with the nozzle, profile, material, infill, walls, supports and speed, and download the G-code with the print time and filament weight.
  • Open it in the SpeakCAD editor, where you click a face to change it, every version is kept, and Fit Check calibrates clearances to your printer.

Claude is told what happens in the card, so you can keep talking about the part. Where a Claude app shows no card, Claude still gets the size, the dimensions and the links.

Claude Code and the desktop app

Connectors belong to your Claude account: add SpeakCAD once on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop and it is in the iPhone and Android apps too. In Claude Code, add the same server from the terminal:

bash
claude mcp add --transport http speakcad https://speakcad.com/api/mcp

then run /mcp in a session to sign in. Handy when the project you are coding needs a case: ask for the enclosure of the board you are wiring up. More clients on the MCP server page.

Which Claude plans

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan; the free plan allows one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector for the organisation and each member connects their own SpeakCAD account.

What it costs

Adding the connector is free on every Claude plan. What it does is paid from your SpeakCAD account, priced exactly as on the site: 2 credits per AI request (the first design or a change), 10 credits per STL or 3MF download (a paid design re-downloads free after small fixes), and 5 credits more for G-code sliced for your printer (included in Pro and Unlimited). Unlimited also includes the requests and downloads. Typing new dimensions in the card and turning the part around in 3D spend nothing.

What Claude and SpeakCAD see

Claude sends SpeakCAD the description of the part, each change you ask for, and the printer and settings for a slice; SpeakCAD never sees the rest of the conversation. Files come back as download links, and a file you drop on the card goes from your browser to the slicer, not through Claude. Connected assistants on your SpeakCAD Plan page disconnects Claude at once. Details: the privacy policy.

No connector? Paste the description

Ask Claude to write the part down with every measurement and paste that text into SpeakCAD: the numbers are used exactly. ChatGPT to STL shows what to keep from the conversation; it works the same with Claude.

Questions

On its own, Claude can describe a part or write OpenSCAD code, but it cannot compile the model, check it for printing or export a mesh. With the SpeakCAD connector it can: Claude hands the description to SpeakCAD's CAD AI, the part appears in 3D in the conversation, and you download a watertight STL or 3MF, or G-code sliced for your printer.

Yes, two. SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer. SpeakCAD Slicer, listed in Claude's connectors directory, needs no sign-in and slices an STL or 3MF you already have: 3 free slices a day in Claude and ChatGPT without an account, then a free SpeakCAD account to keep slicing.

On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, open Customize, then Connectors, and search for SpeakCAD. If only SpeakCAD Slicer comes up, press +, choose Add custom connector, name it SpeakCAD and paste https://speakcad.com/api/mcp. Press Connect, sign in with your SpeakCAD account and press Allow. In Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http speakcad https://speakcad.com/api/mcp.

Yes. Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, and the free plan allows one. What SpeakCAD does is paid from your SpeakCAD account: Starter credits is $5 once for 50 credits.

Adding it is free. Designs, changes and downloads are paid from your SpeakCAD account at the site's prices: 2 credits per AI request, 10 credits per download, 5 credits more for G-code without Pro or Unlimited. Typing new dimensions in the card spends nothing.

The connector is in the iPhone and Android apps once it is added to your Claude account. Whether the 3D card shows there depends on the app version; when it does not, Claude gives you the part's size, dimensions and download links.
