SpeakCAD versus the alternatives
Where SpeakCAD wins, where the other tool wins, and when to use both. All the tools in one table

SpeakCAD vs OpenSCAD
OpenSCAD is powerful but you write every line. SpeakCAD generates the OpenSCAD program from a plain-English description and renders it in the browser. Compare features, learning curve and output.SpeakCAD vs Tinkercad
Tinkercad is the free block-building CAD. SpeakCAD keeps the tapping and adds what Tinkercad lacks: linked millimetres, rounded corners, a phone editor, an AI for the rest, and files sliced for your printer. Compare precision, phones and exports.SpeakCAD vs Fusion 360
Fusion 360 is professional parametric CAD with a steep learning curve. SpeakCAD gets makers from idea to STL in minutes with plain English. Compare capability, speed and cost.SpeakCAD vs Meshy
Meshy generates textured organic meshes for games and art. SpeakCAD generates precise, parametric, watertight CAD parts for 3D printing. Compare outputs, precision and workflow.SpeakCAD vs Tripo AI
Tripo AI creates organic 3D models from text and images for creative work. SpeakCAD creates dimension-accurate, watertight CAD parts for 3D printing. Compare precision, editing and output formats.SpeakCAD vs Shapr3D
Shapr3D is the best-known CAD for iPad, built around the Apple Pencil. SpeakCAD runs in any phone browser and replaces drawing with describing. Compare devices, learning curve, output and price.SpeakCAD vs Thingiverse Customizer
Customizer changes the parameters an author exposed, on the models that support it. SpeakCAD rebuilds any STL as a parametric model and changes anything by chat. Compare scope, reliability and cost.SpeakCAD vs Zoo Text-to-CAD
Zoo generates B-rep CAD from text for engineers and developers, with STEP and an API. SpeakCAD is built for people with a 3D printer: phone browser, chat editing, print rules applied, STL and 3MF out.SpeakCAD vs AdamCAD (CADAM)
CADAM, Adam's open-source text-to-CAD app, writes OpenSCAD with sliders. SpeakCAD does it for 3D printing: phone editor, print rules, sliced G-code.SpeakCAD vs MakerWorld MakerLab
MakerLab, in Bambu Lab's MakerWorld, turns photos into multicolour figurines with Meshy, Tripo and more. SpeakCAD makes functional parts with exact millimetres.SpeakCAD vs Backflip AI
Backflip turns 3D scans, photos and drawings into parametric CAD or STEP for engineers. SpeakCAD designs printable parts from a description, on a phone.SpeakCAD vs STLsmith
STLsmith turns a description into an STL for hooks, brackets and spacers, with free tries. SpeakCAD adds a phone editor, 3MF, sliced G-code and STL editing.SpeakCAD vs Onshape
Onshape is full parametric CAD in the browser with a free plan. SpeakCAD is nine hand tools and an AI for 3D-printed parts, on a phone, with G-code at the end. Compare scope, phones, free tiers and AI.SpeakCAD vs FreeCAD
FreeCAD is free, open-source parametric CAD for the desktop. SpeakCAD runs in a phone browser with nine hand tools and an AI. Compare install, learning curve, fillets, phones and output.SpeakCAD vs SketchUp Free
SketchUp Free is a browser modeller built for architecture; its exports are surfaces, not always solids. SpeakCAD makes watertight parts in millimetres on a phone. Compare printability, dimensions and phones.Questions
For a part that has to fit, choose an AI CAD tool that computes the geometry from your numbers, not a mesh generator: SpeakCAD to work from a phone and get G-code sliced for your printer, AdamCAD's open-source CADAM to self-host on a computer, Zoo for STEP files, STLsmith for simple hooks and brackets. Meshy, Tripo and MakerLab are better for figurines.
Yes for the hand tools and the files they make. AI requests use credits, and so do downloads of AI work without a plan. Free, no card: the hand tools (hole with a screw head, cut, add, extrude, text, rounded corners and edges, shell, measure, copies in a row, a grid or a circle, every size and position typed in millimetres) on the live demo without an account and in a free account, where a part you shaped by hand downloads free as STL or 3MF; the live demo's 3 AI edits of a real part; opening one of the 650+ ready-made library models in a free account, resizing it in the viewer and downloading it as STL or 3MF; and the Fit Check coupon as STL or 3MF. A new free account also gets its first AI part free (not offered in every country): some accounts get the credits right away, others confirm with a card first (a free trial, nothing charged that day); downloading the part spends 4 credits without a plan, like any AI work (every plan includes downloads). Shaping a part by hand (a hole and its screw head, a cut, an added tab, raised or engraved text, an extruded face, rounded corners, and copies in a row, a grid or a circle) and downloading what you shaped are free. A new part or a design change by the AI spends 3 credits, a small change 2, a quick edit 1; downloads are included in every plan (4 credits without one), and G-code sliced for your printer costs the same as the STL. G-code sliced for your printer costs the same as the STL: included in every plan, free for a part you shaped by hand, 4 credits without a plan for a part with AI work in it. Credits come with a plan, or once as a top-up. A typical AI part (the part, a small change and a few quick edits, the download included) spends about 8 credits, so Maker's 50 credits a month cover about six AI parts. Maker $7.99/mo (50 credits a month, downloads included, sliced G-code too); Pro $14.99/mo (200 credits a month); Unlimited $79.99/mo (300 AI requests a month included, downloads unlimited). Credits can also be bought once, without a plan: 20 for $4.99, 50 for $9.99, 100 for $17.99 or 200 for $34.99. They never expire and add to a plan's credits; a credit costs less the bigger the top-up, and more than on any plan.
Not by itself: ChatGPT can describe a part or write OpenSCAD code, but it does not produce a printable file. Paste its description or code into SpeakCAD (see the ChatGPT to STL page) to get an STL, a 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
For figurines and organic sculpts: Meshy, Tripo or MakerLab. For STEP files for a machinist: Zoo, Backflip or Fusion 360. To learn CAD for free: Tinkercad. For open source and self-hosting: CADAM or OpenSCAD.
