Bambu Lab A1 vs A1 mini: is the bigger bed worth it?

The A1 and the A1 mini are the same design at two sizes: 256 x 256 x 256 mm against 180 x 180 x 180 mm, with the same extruder, hotends, calibration, camera and AMS lite. The mini is cheaper, quieter and takes less room; the A1 prints large trays, organizers and enclosures in one piece. If your parts are under 180 mm, the mini loses nothing. If you think you will ever want a 250 mm drawer organizer in one go, get the A1.
The short version

Who should buy which

Both printers are in SpeakCAD's slicer catalog with their official OrcaSlicer profiles, so this page has no printer to sell you. The numbers in the table come from those profiles; the prices are the makers' launch prices, and prices moved in 2025 and differ by region.
1

Buy the A1 if…

You will print organizers, trays, build-plate racks or enclosures wider than 180 mm, or you want to fill the bed with many small parts per job. You have the desk depth for a bed that travels 256 mm.
2

Buy the A1 mini if…

Your parts are phone stands, small cases, brackets, knobs and clips; you want the quietest, smallest printer and the lower price; you can split the occasional big part in two.
3

Either way, the first custom part

Describe it with its measurements, check it on a virtual bed the size of the printer you chose, and download a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 or a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 mini, sliced with its official profile. The first render usually appears within a minute or two: a new part gets deeper reasoning through the geometry, and small edits land in seconds.

What is identical

The extruder and quick-swap hotends, the 300 °C nozzle temperature, the automatic flow and vibration calibration, the textured PEI sheet, the camera, the Handy app and Bambu Studio, the AMS lite for four colours. Print quality on a small part is indistinguishable between the two.

What the A1 adds

  • Volume: 256 mm in each axis against 180 mm. In practice that is the difference between one drawer organizer and two halves, or four Gridfinity bins per plate and nine.
  • Throughput: more parts per job for a workshop or a small business.
  • Height: 256 mm lets a vase, a tall enclosure or a bottle holder print standing up.

What the A1 mini does better

  • Price: $299 at launch against $399, and $459 against $559 with the AMS lite.
  • Noise and footprint: the lighter, smaller bed moves less air and needs less depth on the desk.
  • Speed on small parts: less moving mass, so the same acceleration settings are quieter and cleaner.

Which parts fit which

Most functional parts fit 180 mm: the bed-size guide lists real sizes. The parts that need the A1 are wide and flat: organizers, trays, racks, large lids. SpeakCAD's viewer shows a virtual bed the size of the printer you pick, so a part that overhangs the mini's bed is obvious before you slice it, and "split this into two halves with alignment pins" is one sentence.

Prices

Verdict

Buy the A1 mini unless you can name a part wider than 180 mm you will print more than once. If you can, the A1's extra bed is worth the difference; everything else is the same printer.

Sliced for either one

SpeakCAD ships the OrcaSlicer profiles of the Bambu Lab A1 and the Bambu Lab A1 mini, like 380+ other printers. Describe a part in plain English on a phone or a computer, watch it render on a virtual bed of the size above, change it by chat, and download a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 or a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 mini, with the print time and filament weight. The STL and 3MF are always there for your own slicer. The Bambu Lab A1 and Bambu Lab A1 mini pages have prompts sized for each bed and the library parts made for them.

Questions

Both are rated for the same maximum speeds. On small parts the mini is often the cleaner printer because its bed weighs less; on large flat parts the A1 simply has the room the mini lacks.

Yes, the same unit. Multi-colour prints purge filament at each change on both.

A Raspberry Pi case easily (about 95 x 65 mm). A drawer organizer wider than 180 mm prints as two halves with alignment pins, which is one sentence to ask for; on the A1 it prints in one piece up to 256 mm.

Yes, both, with the OrcaSlicer profile each maker ships: a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 and a sliced .gcode.3mf for the A1 mini, or an STL or 3MF for your own slicer. The bed sizes in the table are the ones the viewer shows while you design.

Whichever you choose, the first part is a sentence away

Describe the part with its measurements, check it on the A1's or the A1 mini's bed, and download it sliced.
