How much does a custom 3D printed part really cost in 2026?

Filament, electricity, printer wear and, the hidden one, design time. A realistic breakdown of what a custom part costs at home, and where AI CAD changes the math.

Material

A 1 kg spool of PLA or PETG costs $15 to $25. A typical functional part (a bracket, a knob, a small enclosure) weighs 15 to 60 g, so $0.30 to $1.50 of plastic. Even a large organizer rarely passes $4.

Electricity

A desktop FDM printer draws 60 to 150 W while printing. A three-hour print is roughly 0.3 kWh, or a few cents at residential rates.

Printer wear

Nozzles, belts, bed sheets and the occasional hotend. Spread over the life of a $300 to $1,000 machine, most people land around $0.10 to $0.30 per print hour.

The hidden cost: design time

This is where the numbers stop being cents. Modelling a knob with a D-shaft in a traditional CAD program is 20 to 60 minutes for someone who knows the tool, and an evening (or a weekend of tutorials) for someone who does not. At any reasonable value of your time, design dominates the bill for one-off parts.

Buying vs printing

An OEM replacement knob costs $12 to $40 shipped, if it exists. A printed one costs about a dollar in materials plus your design time. The design time was the reason people kept buying knobs.
