FAQ

People who own a 3D printer and need a functional part that fits something they have: an enclosure for their board, a box sized to what goes inside, a bracket on their screws, a holder for their tools, a copy of a broken clip or knob, or a change to an STL they downloaded. No CAD skills needed, on a phone or a computer. If you only need to slice a file you already have, any slicer does that; if you have no printer, SpeakCAD can print the part for you, but the editor is made for people who print at home.

Yes. SpeakCAD's online slicer (speakcad.com/online-slicer) takes an STL or 3MF of up to 50 MB, slices it with the unmodified OrcaSlicer and the profile of your printer (380+ models from 60+ brands), and gives you a .gcode, or a sliced .gcode.3mf for Bambu Lab printers, with the print time and filament weight. You choose the layer height, filament, infill, supports, speed, walls and bed adhesion. It runs in the browser on a computer, a Chromebook, an iPad or a phone, with nothing to install. Free with a free account, no card, no credits: up to 10 files a day (60 on a paid plan). The model is sliced as it is; to change it first, use the AI editor.

The online slicer is free with a free account (no card, no credits): up to 10 files a day, and re-slicing the same file with other settings within 24 hours does not count. Accounts on a paid plan slice up to 60 files a day. Credits only pay for the AI editor.

It goes from your browser straight to the slicer service, never through SpeakCAD's web servers. It is sliced in a temporary folder that is deleted when the job ends, and it is not kept.

Nein.

Start from a box, plate, cylinder or tray, or from your own STL or 3MF (upload it with the Upload an STL or 3MF card in a new model's empty editor, drop it on the Edit an STL box with the change left empty, on the online slicer and press Change it with AI with nothing typed, or on SpeakCAD's card in ChatGPT or Claude with no change), tap a face and pick Hole, Cut, Add, Extrude, Text, Round, Fillet, Shell or Measure. Each tool asks for its sizes in millimetres (a hole has M2 to M8 clearance presets, a Through depth and a counterbore or a countersink for the screw head; a cut is a rectangle, circle, slot or hexagon, with M2 to M8 nut-trap presets for the hexagon; Add puts a tab or boss on the face; Round rounds or chamfers the corners of a part; Text writes raised or engraved letters, up to 40 characters in one bold sans font). Extrude pulls a whole flat face out, or pushes it in, by the distance you type; a curved face is an AI request. Fillet rounds or chamfers the straight edges around a flat face you tap, all of them or the ones you pick (the top edges of a box, one front edge, the rim of a hole); around a shape standing on the face it adds a fillet at its foot. An edge of a curved face, a variable fillet or a blend between fillets is an AI request. Shell hollows a part to the wall thickness you type, open on the face you tapped or closed inside. A hole, a cut, an added shape or a text lands where you tap, and its Position rows set its centre in millimetres from the face's edges (Centre 12 mm from the left edge), before you apply it or later on its card. Duplicate, on the card of a placed hole, cut, tab or text, makes copies of it in a row, a grid or a circle (and of a hole, a cut or a tab, a mirror image), up to 100. The part rebuilds in your browser in about a second, and every edit is a numbered version you can undo or remove later. Shaping a part by hand (a hole and its screw head, a cut, an added tab, raised or engraved text, an extruded face, rounded corners, and copies in a row, a grid or a circle) and downloading what you shaped are free. An AI request spends credits for the work it takes: a quick edit usually 1–2, a small change 1–2, a new part or a design change 3–8, never more than 15 credits; on a plan the first three small changes of each part are free; downloads are included in every plan (4 credits without one), and G-code sliced for your printer costs the same as the STL. The tools also work on any other part in your account (a library model, a pasted program, a part the AI worked on): the hand edits stay free, and its download is included in every plan (4 credits without one, with a design you already downloaded, or a small fix of it, re-downloading free). What the tools cannot do (round a single edge, hollow a part, move a lid, build from a photo) is one AI request away in the same chat, and the AI keeps your hand edits.

For a printed part with real dimensions, SpeakCAD: you tap the face where a hole, a cut or a tab goes and type its size and its distance from the edges, on a phone or a computer, and the AI is there when you would rather describe it. Measured on the editor: an M4 hole 6 mm from two edges of a plate, 4 taps and 2 typed numbers; an open box with 8 mm rounded corners, 2 taps and 1 typed number on a computer (3 taps on a phone); the plate's top face pulled out 5 mm, 3 taps; the same hole moved 10 mm, 1 tap and 1 typed number; a row of four M4 holes 10 mm apart, 6 taps and 4 typed numbers. Tinkercad fits better for a first lesson in CAD on a computer, a classroom in particular: it is free in full and you build by dragging blocks, but it does not run on a phone. Onshape fits better when you need sketches with constraints, fillets on the edges you pick, assemblies or STEP files, and accept a real learning curve and public documents on its free plan. The counts, the method and the sources are at speakcad.com/intuitive-cad.

Yes, in the browser, with nothing to install: SpeakCAD runs in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Start from a box, a plate, a cylinder or a tray, tap a face and use the hand tools (Hole, Cut, Add, Extrude, Text, Round, Fillet, Shell and Measure), typing every size and position in millimetres, or describe the part to the AI. The STL, 3MF or G-code downloads to Files or Downloads. A part shaped by hand downloads free with a free account; AI requests use credits, and downloads of AI work are included in every plan. The live demo works on a phone without an account.

In SpeakCAD, tap Hole, tap the face of the part, pick a size (M2 to M8 clearance presets, Through for all the way) and type the hole centre's distance from two edges of that face, such as 6 mm from the left edge and 6 mm from the front edge, then press Apply hole: measured on a plate, 4 taps and 2 typed numbers. To do it on your own STL or 3MF without an AI turn, open the file with no change typed (upload it with the Upload an STL or 3MF card in a new model's empty editor, drop it on the Edit an STL box with the change left empty, on the online slicer and press Change it with AI with nothing typed, or on SpeakCAD's card in ChatGPT or Claude with no change). The hole stays editable: retype its distances or tap Move to put it somewhere else. Adding it, and downloading a file you changed only by hand, is free with a free account. In SpeakCAD, place one hole and tap Duplicate on its card: Line, Copies 4 and Spacing 20 make four holes 20 mm apart, centre to centre. To do it on your own STL or 3MF without an AI turn, open the file with no change typed (upload it with the Upload an STL or 3MF card in a new model's empty editor, drop it on the Edit an STL box with the change left empty, on the online slicer and press Change it with AI with nothing typed, or on SpeakCAD's card in ChatGPT or Claude with no change), tap Hole, tap the face, pick the size (M2 to M8 presets) and type the first hole's distance from the face's edges, then press Apply hole and Duplicate. Grid makes rows of them (four corner holes are a 2 × 2 grid), Circle a bolt circle around the face's centre or a point you tap, and Mirror a twin across the face's centre line; up to 100 copies, whose count and spacing stay numbers you can change. It is free, and so is downloading a file you changed only by hand, with a free account. Guide: speakcad.com/guides/duplicate-a-hole-pattern

For an M3 flat head screw (ISO 10642 or DIN 7991), a 90° countersink 6.6 mm across at the surface over a 3.4 mm clearance hole. For an M3 socket head cap screw, a counterbore 6.5 mm across and 3.4 mm deep instead. Both are rounded up for printing, because a printed hole comes out 0.2 to 0.4 mm small. In SpeakCAD they are the presets: tap Hole, tap the face, M3, then Screw head: Countersink or Counterbore, and Apply hole; the Head diameter stays a number you can change if your screws measure differently. A countersink facing the bed prints without supports (a 45° overhang). The M2 to M8 table: speakcad.com/guides/countersink-counterbore-screw-hole

In SpeakCAD, tap Text, tap a flat face, type up to 40 characters, choose Raised or Engraved and the Letter height, and press Apply text. The Depth sets how far the letters stand up or sink in; letters 5 mm tall and 0.6 to 1 mm deep read well with a 0.4 mm nozzle; the Position rows place the text from the face's edges and an Angle turns it. The font is a bold sans, the same for every text, and the text stays a feature: retype its Letter height, Depth or Angle, Move it or Duplicate it. It is free, and so is downloading a file you changed only by hand, with a free account; text that wraps around a curved face is an AI request (2 credits). Yes. SpeakCAD's hand tools (Hole, Cut, Add, Extrude, Text, Round, Fillet, Shell and Measure) need no AI: Shaping a part by hand (a hole and its screw head, a cut, an added tab, raised or engraved text, an extruded face, rounded corners, and copies in a row, a grid or a circle) and downloading what you shaped are free. They run in the browser on a phone or a computer, and the live demo needs no account. Other free options, without AI: Tinkercad, free in full on a computer (no phones, no fillet tool); Onshape's free plan, full parametric CAD whose documents are all public and for non-commercial use; and FreeCAD, free desktop software with a steeper learning curve.

For 3D printing, start with a real part rather than a lesson: SpeakCAD is the easiest way to start CAD for 3D printing. You begin from a box, a plate, a cylinder or a tray that already has its sizes, tap the face where a hole, a cut or a tab goes and type the millimetres, on your phone or computer, with nothing to install; the AI is there when you are stuck. Measured on the editor: an M4 hole 6 mm from two edges of a plate, 4 taps and 2 typed numbers. Tinkercad is the gentler first lesson about shapes on a computer, for a child or a classroom; Onshape or Fusion is where to learn professional CAD with sketches and constraints. A first part in six steps, the ideas every CAD shares and a first week of parts: speakcad.com/cad-for-beginners.

Yes, by hand and free. Fillet rounds or chamfers the straight edges around a flat face: tap the face (the top of a box, say), set a radius or a chamfer size and keep all its edges or only the ones you pick, one front edge or the rim of a hole; around a tab or a boss standing on the face it adds a fillet at its foot. Round rounds or chamfers the corners of a part: tap a face, and the edges parallel to that face's normal get the radius (the vertical corners of a box; a pocket you cut by hand gets its own corner radius on the Cut card). On your own STL or 3MF opened with no AI turn, the whole file is one part, so Round rounds the corners of its outline seen from the face you tapped: right for a boxy part, and refused when the radius would take off more than the corners. An edge of a curved face, a variable fillet or a blend between fillets is an AI request, a small change (2 credits). The rounding is built into the model, so the STL, 3MF and G-code carry it.

Nein.

Nein.

Yes. No printer? SpeakCAD has a part printed in PLA or PETG and shipped by tracked delivery: designed in the editor or picked from the library or the marketplace, priced from a real slice before you pay (from $1.19 or €1.09 for a small part, plus tracked shipping with the import duties), up to 100 copies per order, to 40 countries in North America, Europe, Oceania and East Asia. In the editor, press Download, then Print it for me; on a library or marketplace page, Print it. Details on the 3D printing service page (/3d-printing-service).

It depends on the part: we slice it and price the grams of plastic, the printing hours, the print farm's setup, then tracked shipping with import duties at what it costs us, taxes included, before you pay. A small part like an AirTag holder is $1.19 plus $1.60 shipping in the United States (€1.09 plus €1.80 in the euro area); ten of them are $0.31 each plus one shipping, because the setup and the postage count once per order. No plan is needed to order a print.

Made to order, so it can't be returned; if we can't deliver it, or it arrives broken, the full price comes back as SpeakCAD credits. The number of credits, at the Pro plan's rate, is shown on the order form before you pay. Write to us in the chat on the site with your order number.
