# SpeakCAD vs Thingiverse Customizer: sliders the author chose, or any change you can describe

> Customizer changes the parameters an author exposed, on the models that support it. SpeakCAD rebuilds any STL as a parametric model and changes anything by chat. Compare scope, reliability and cost.

Customizer was a great idea: OpenSCAD models with exposed parameters, adjustable with sliders in the browser, no software needed. It still is, on the models that support it. The limits are that most models do not, you can only change what the author exposed, and the service has a long history of queues and outages. SpeakCAD starts from the same foundation (parametric OpenSCAD) and removes all three limits.

| | SpeakCAD | Thingiverse Customizer |
|---|---|---|
| Which models | Any: describe a new one, or upload any STL, 3MF or .scad and have it rebuilt parametrically | Only OpenSCAD models uploaded with Customizer enabled |
| What you can change | Anything you can describe: sizes, holes, lids, mounts, text, fits | Only the parameters the author exposed |
| Interface | Chat plus a dimensions panel; tap a face to read a size | Sliders and fields per parameter |
| Rendering | In your browser: a rebuild or a new part takes about a minute, a changed value recompiles in seconds | Server-side queue; historically slow or unavailable |
| Mobile | Full editor in a phone browser | Works in a browser, but sliders on a phone are fiddly |
| Output | STL, 3MF, G-code sliced for your printer | STL |
| Printables, MakerWorld models | Upload the file and rebuild it | Not available: Customizer is Thingiverse only |
| Test the fit before a long print | Fit Check: free 5-minute test slice of the fit, then your printer's calibration is applied to every model | No: reprint, or cut a test piece yourself |
| Price | Maker $7.99/mo (50 credits); Pro $14.99/mo; Unlimited $79.99/mo | Free |

## The same idea, taken further

Both tools rest on OpenSCAD, the code CAD where a model is a program with named variables. Customizer exposes those variables as sliders. SpeakCAD has the AI write the program from your description, or from a file you upload, and then edit the program when you ask for a change. So instead of the author deciding in 2014 that you may change the width but not add a screw hole, you say "add two M3 holes on the base 40 mm apart" and the program changes.

## Where Customizer wins

It is free, and on a model that was designed for it (a box generator, a gear generator, a text tag) it is fast to use: drag the slider, download. If the model you want is one of those, use it, and if Customizer is down (it often has been), download the .scad source from the Thing, upload it to SpeakCAD and change the values there.

## Where SpeakCAD wins

Almost every model on Thingiverse, Printables and MakerWorld is a plain STL with no Customizer support. SpeakCAD takes the STL, rebuilds it as a parametric model and lets you change what you need: a longer box, a different board's holes, a snap lid instead of screws, your name on the front. It also works on a phone, compiles in your browser rather than on a queued server, and exports 3MF as well as STL. The rebuild is an AI request, so it spends credits (4 for the rebuild on a plan, its first 3 small changes free, 3 without a plan, then 2 for a small change; the download is included in every plan, 4 credits without one); Customizer costs nothing. And when the change you need is not a size but a new feature, there is no slider for that on Customizer and there is a sentence for it here.

## A note on fidelity

A rebuild reproduces functional geometry (dimensions, walls, holes, cutouts, lids) faithfully and decorative detail approximately. Sculpted models stay a job for a mesh editor. For the functional prints Customizer was made for, the rebuild is usually cleaner than the original.

## Verdict

Use Customizer when the model was built for it and the service is up. Use SpeakCAD for the models without Customizer support, for changes the author did not anticipate, and for doing it from a phone.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the most intuitive CAD for 3D printing, made for people who own a 3D printer and need a part that fits something they have: tap a face and type a size to shape it with simple tools, or describe it to the AI, on your phone or computer, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
