# SpeakCAD vs Fusion 360: when you need a part, not a career

> Fusion 360 is professional parametric CAD with a steep learning curve. SpeakCAD gets makers from idea to STL in minutes with plain English. Compare capability, speed and cost.

Fusion 360 can model anything, simulate it and generate toolpaths for a CNC. It is also a serious commitment: sketches, constraints, timelines and a licensing model that keeps changing for hobbyists. SpeakCAD targets the 80% of maker parts that do not need any of that.

| | SpeakCAD | Fusion 360 |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Functional 3D-printed parts | Full product design, assemblies, CAM, simulation |
| Learning curve | Minutes | Weeks to months |
| Input | Plain English, images, STL | Sketches, features, constraints |
| Install | None: runs entirely in the browser, nothing to download | Desktop app (multi-GB download), GPU recommended |
| On a phone | Full editor in a phone browser | No; the mobile app is a viewer |
| Organic/complex surfaces | No | Yes (forms, surfaces) |
| Assemblies | Simple multi-part layouts | Full joints and motion |
| Test the fit before a long print | Fit Check: free 5-minute test slice of the fit, then your printer's calibration is applied to every model | No: you cut a test piece yourself |
| Cost | Maker $7.99/mo (50 credits); Pro $14.99/mo; Unlimited $79.99/mo | Personal use licence with limits, paid plans (check their site) |
| Exports | STL, 3MF, G-code sliced for your printer | STEP, STL, 3MF, OBJ, F3D, more |

## Different tools for different jobs

If you design products for injection moulding, need STEP files for a machinist, or model curvy consumer goods, Fusion 360 is the right tool and SpeakCAD is not trying to replace it. For the bracket under your desk, the knob on your amplifier or the enclosure for your sensor, opening Fusion is overkill: SpeakCAD needs a browser tab and a sentence.

## Speed to first print

A SpeakCAD session is: describe, check the render, adjust one thing, download. A typical functional part, with a couple of edits and a dimension check, is a downloaded file in about 10 to 15 minutes. It also works as a sketchpad to validate an idea before committing to a full model.

## Precision and printability

SpeakCAD applies your dimensions exactly and adds FDM design rules by default. Fusion will do whatever you tell it, including things that do not print well.

## Verdict

Keep Fusion 360 for product design and anything organic or assembled. Use SpeakCAD when you need a functional part in minutes and the geometry is describable in words.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the most intuitive CAD for 3D printing, made for people who own a 3D printer and need a part that fits something they have: tap a face and type a size to shape it with simple tools, or describe it to the AI, on your phone or computer, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
