# SpeakCAD vs FreeCAD: free desktop CAD that does everything, or a printed part in minutes

> FreeCAD is free, open-source parametric CAD for the desktop. SpeakCAD runs in a phone browser with six hand tools and an AI. Compare install, learning curve, fillets, phones and output.

FreeCAD is the free, open-source answer to professional CAD: sketches with constraints, a parametric history, fillets, assemblies, STEP in and out, and version 1.1 fixed the toponaming problem that used to break models when you edited them. It is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux, and reviewers agree on its one cost: the interface and the learning curve. SpeakCAD trades almost all of that capability for a phone browser, six tools in millimetres and an AI, aimed at one thing: a part for a 3D printer.

| | SpeakCAD | FreeCAD |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Functional 3D-printed parts: hand tools plus AI | General parametric CAD: Part Design, sketches, assemblies, drawings, FEM, CAM |
| Install | None: runs in the browser | Desktop download for Windows, macOS and Linux |
| On a phone | Full editor laid out for a thumb | No: desktop only |
| Learning curve | Six tools in millimetres, or describe it | Steep: workbenches, sketch constraints, feature history |
| Fillets | Round tool on the corners of a part (pockets you cut by hand get their own corner radius); a single edge is an AI request | Fillets and chamfers on any edge |
| AI | Designs the part or the change from plain words; keeps your hand edits | None built in |
| Inputs | Starters (box, plate, cylinder, tray) and hand tools on a tapped face; text, photos with a ruler to copy a part, STL/3MF/.scad uploads | Sketches; STEP, IGES, STL, SVG, DXF, OBJ, IFC, DAE and more |
| Printability | Wall thickness, clearances, flat base and overhang rules applied by default | You apply the rules; a mesh export step |
| Output | STL, 3MF, G-code sliced for your printer | STEP, IGES, STL, SVG, DXF, OBJ and more |
| Sliced G-code | Yes, for 380+ printers: included in Pro and Unlimited, +5 credits per slice otherwise | No: open the STL in your slicer |
| Test the fit before a long print | Fit Check: free 5-minute test slice of the fit, then your printer's calibration is applied to every model | No: reprint, or cut a test piece yourself |
| Free to try | Hand tools (hole, cut, add, rounded corners, measure) and the STL or 3MF they make, with a free account; live demo (3 AI edits of a real part, no account); 650+ ready-made library models open in a free account and resize in the viewer; AI requests, downloads of AI work and G-code use credits | Entirely free, open source |
| Price | Maker $7.99/mo (60 credits); Pro $14.99/mo; Unlimited $39.99/mo | Free |

## The free one that does everything

FreeCAD is remarkable: a full parametric CAD, free and open source, that reads and writes STEP, runs on three operating systems and now, since 1.1, keeps your model intact when you edit an early feature. If you are willing to learn it, nothing on this page is a reason not to.

The reason people look for an alternative is the learning. FreeCAD has workbenches, a sketcher with constraints, a feature tree, and conventions that take weeks to feel natural. For an engineer that is the price of power. For someone who needs a bracket this evening, it is the whole evening.

## Where FreeCAD wins

- **Everything is there**: sketches, constraints, fillets on the edges you pick, assemblies, technical drawings, FEM, CAM, and STEP for a machinist.
- **Free and open source**, no account, no cloud, your files on your disk.
- **A huge community** and years of tutorials.

## Where SpeakCAD wins

- **Nothing to install, and a phone is enough.** Tap a face, pick a tool, type millimetres, in Safari or Chrome.
- **Minutes, not weeks.** Six tools cover holes, cuts, tabs, extruded faces, rounded corners and measurements; the AI covers the rest from a sentence.
- **Printing built in.** Print rules by default, Fit Check calibrated to your printer, and G-code sliced for 380+ printers.
- **Changing a downloaded STL.** Drop it with no change typed and add the hole where you tap, free, or describe the change to the AI.

## Using both

Plenty of people will keep FreeCAD for the project that needs an assembly or a STEP file and use SpeakCAD for the quick functional parts on the phone. The two do not share editable files: SpeakCAD exports meshes, which FreeCAD imports as meshes.

## Verdict

Choose FreeCAD if you want full, free, open-source CAD on a computer and you have time to learn it. Choose SpeakCAD if the part is for a 3D printer, you want it today, from a phone, by hand or by describing it.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the easiest way to design a part with real dimensions on your phone: shape it with simple tools or describe it to the AI, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
