# Slicing on a school or work computer where you can't install software

> Locked-down PCs, managed Macs and school Chromebooks block slicer installs. What the options are, what to ask IT, and how a browser slicer fits in.

## Why the install fails

School and company computers are managed. An administrator decides what runs on them, and a standard account usually cannot install programs, run an installer that needs administrator rights, or open executables downloaded from the internet. OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Cura and Bambu Studio are ordinary desktop programs, so on a managed Windows PC or Mac the install stops at a password prompt or a block message. On a managed Chromebook, the Linux environment those slicers would need is often turned off.

None of this is a fault to work around. Machines are locked down for security, licensing and support reasons, and the options below respect that.

## Option 1: ask for the slicer to be installed

The cleanest answer on a Windows or macOS machine that will be used for printing regularly. OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer and Cura are free and open source, which makes them easy for IT to approve: no licence to buy and a public source code. Bambu Studio is also free, and it is the maker's own slicer for Bambu Lab printers.

What helps the request:

- **Which slicer, and why that one:** the one whose profile matches the printers you have.
- **Where it comes from:** the project's official download page or its official releases, not a mirror.
- **What it needs:** it runs offline once installed; it needs network access only for printing over the network or for updates.
- **Who uses it:** one classroom, one lab, one department.

It can take days or weeks. In the meantime, or when the answer is no, the other options apply.

## Option 2: portable versions, only with permission

Some slicers are distributed in forms that run without an installer, such as a zip file or an AppImage on Linux. On a managed machine, running one may still break the rules you agreed to, and many managed machines block unknown executables whatever their form. Treat it like an install: ask first.

## Option 3: slice in the browser

A browser-based slicer is a website, so there is nothing to install, approve or update on the machine. [SpeakCAD's online slicer](/online-slicer) runs the unmodified OrcaSlicer on a server, with the printer, process and filament presets OrcaSlicer bundles for 380+ printers from 60+ brands. The browser only shows the model and the settings.

1. Open [the online slicer](https://app.speakcad.com/signup?next=%2Fslicer) and sign in, or create an account (free, no card).
2. Choose the STL or 3MF (up to 50 MB) from the computer's files, a network drive or a cloud folder the browser can reach.
3. Pick the printer, the print profile, the material, infill and supports.
4. Slice and download the G-code, with the print time and filament weight.

It works on a managed Windows PC, a managed Mac and a school Chromebook alike, as long as the website itself is not blocked by the network's filter. If it is, that is again a question for IT.

### What to check before relying on it

- **The file leaves the machine.** It goes from the browser to the slicing service, is sliced in a temporary folder deleted when the job ends, and is not kept. That is fine for a bracket or a class project; for a confidential design at work, check your company's rules on uploading files to outside services first.
- **An account per person.** Each student or employee signs in with their own account. Printers and settings are saved on the account, so any machine they sit at slices with the same profile.
- **The limits.** The online slicer covers single-material prints with the main settings. Colour painting, modifiers, custom start G-code and toolpath previews need a desktop slicer.

## Getting the G-code to the printer from a managed machine

- **SD card or USB stick.** The universal route, if USB storage is allowed; some managed machines block it.
- **The printer's web interface.** Mainsail, Fluidd, OctoPrint and PrusaLink are web pages on the local network. From a managed machine this is often the easiest route, provided that the machine and the printer are on networks that can reach each other. School networks often separate them; ask.
- **A shared folder** on a computer next to the printer that is allowed to have a slicer or a card reader.

## Schools: a few specifics

For a class, the browser route has practical advantages: nothing to install on a cart of Chromebooks, the printer profile follows the student rather than the device, and every slice reports the print time and grams before anything is printed. Teachers can check that a print fits the lesson or the filament budget before it goes on the queue. [How to 3D print from a Chromebook](/blog/how-to-3d-print-from-a-chromebook) and [slicer for Chromebook](/slicer-for-chromebook) cover the Chromebook details. [The print time and cost calculator](/3d-print-cost-calculator) gives an estimate without an account.

## What it costs

The online slicer gives every account 1 free slice, its first (a free account, no card). After that, a slice uses one slice from a Slicer pack (20 slices for $3, once, never expire) or 5 credits, and slicing is included in Pro and Unlimited. Re-slicing the same file with other settings within 10 minutes is free. On every plan, an account can start up to 60 slices a day.

## The short version

Ask IT to install a desktop slicer (OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer and Cura are open source, with no licence to buy) if the machine will be used for printing often. Until then, or if the answer is no, slice in the browser: [open the online slicer](https://app.speakcad.com/signup?next=%2Fslicer), and check your organisation's rules on uploading files if the design is confidential.

## FAQ

### How do I slice an STL on a computer where I can't install software?

Use a browser-based slicer: it is a website, so nothing is installed. Upload the STL, pick your printer and download the G-code. For regular use, ask IT to install a desktop slicer such as OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer or Cura, which are open source.

### Can I use a portable slicer on a work computer?

Only with permission. Running a program without installing it may still break the rules of a managed machine, and many managed machines block unknown executables anyway. Ask IT first.

### Does an online slicer work on a school Chromebook?

Yes, if the school has not blocked the website. Nothing is installed, so the Linux and app restrictions of a managed Chromebook do not apply.

### Is it safe to upload a work file to an online slicer?

It depends on your company's rules. SpeakCAD's online slicer does not keep the file: it is sliced in a temporary folder deleted when the job ends. For confidential designs, check your organisation's policy on outside services first.

### What does the online slicer cost?

The online slicer gives every account 1 free slice, its first (a free account, no card). After that, a slice uses one slice from a Slicer pack (20 slices for $3, once, never expire) or 5 credits, and slicing is included in Pro and Unlimited. ## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the mobile-first AI 3D editor for 3D printing: describe a part in plain English on your phone or computer and get an instant, print-ready STL or 3MF, or G-code already sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
