# How to edit a 3D model with AI: the workflow that changes one thing without breaking the rest

> Most 'AI 3D' tools regenerate the whole object when you ask for a change. Here is how a parametric AI editor makes surgical edits, and the exact way to phrase them.

## Two kinds of "edit"

Ask a generative mesh tool to make the handle of a mug thicker and it produces a new mug. Similar, not the same: the rim moved, the base changed, the handle is thicker but also somewhere else. That is not an edit, it is a re-roll.

A parametric AI editor works on a **program**, not a mesh. The mug is `handle_thickness = 6;` and a few dozen other lines. "Make the handle thicker" changes that one line. The rim, the base and the handle position are untouched because nothing touched them. This is how SpeakCAD works: the AI writes OpenSCAD, your browser compiles it, and every edit is a diff.

## The workflow

1. **Generate the first version** with the dimensions that matter. Do not try to get everything in one prompt.
2. **Look at it.** Orbit the render, check the dimensions readout, read the AI's summary of what it assumed.
3. **Edit one thing at a time.** "Make it 5 mm taller." Wait for the render. "Now add a 6 mm hole through the base, centred." One request, one change, one render.
4. **Compare with the ghost.** After each edit the previous version shows as a translucent overlay so you can see exactly what moved. Keep it or undo it in one click.
5. **Print, measure, fix.** Quote the measured error: "the lid is 0.3 mm too tight". Re-download; small fixes after a paid download re-download free.

## How to phrase an edit

- **Amounts, not adjectives.** "2 mm wider" beats "a bit wider". "Wider" alone is a guess.
- **Name the feature.** "The cable slot", "the left standoff", "the lid clips". If the model has named parts, click one in the viewer and the edit is scoped to it.
- **State the intent when it matters.** "Widen the hole so an M4 bolt passes freely" lets the AI apply the right clearance instead of a literal number.
- **One change per message.** Two changes in one message work, but when one of them is wrong you cannot undo just that one.
- **Ask what changed.** "What did you change?" returns the parameters that moved.

## Edits that are always safe

Dimensions, hole sizes and positions, wall thickness, fillet radii, counts (four vents to six), fit types, text. These touch a parameter or two and never move anything else.

## Edits that are really redesigns

"Turn the box into a two-part enclosure", "make it a stand instead of a bracket", "start over with a hexagon". The AI does them, but they rewrite most of the program. Expect the other features to be re-placed, and, without a plan, expect the next download to spend 4 credits again if you had already paid for the old design (every plan includes downloads).

## Editing a model you did not generate

Upload the .scad file of any OpenSCAD model and edit it by chat as if you had generated it. Upload an STL and you can build around it (a lid, a mount, a mating part) but not change its geometry: a mesh has no parameters left to edit. More on that in the STL guide linked below.

## Why this beats a toolbar

In a desktop CAD program a change that touches a feature early in the timeline can break every feature after it. In a chat-driven parametric model the AI resolves the dependencies for you: move a hole and the countersink follows, thicken a wall and the lid clearance is recomputed. You describe the outcome and check the render.

## Prompts to try

- A phone stand for a 78 mm wide phone at 60 degrees with a 12 mm cable slot underneath. Make the width, angle and slot width parameters so I can change them later. - A wall bracket for a 32 mm pipe with two M4 screw holes 40 mm apart. Name the parts 'clamp', 'base' and 'holes' so I can edit them separately. ## FAQ

### Can AI edit a 3D model without regenerating it?

Yes, if the model is parametric. SpeakCAD stores every model as an OpenSCAD program with named dimensions, so an edit changes a parameter and recompiles; the untouched features stay exactly where they were. Mesh-based generators cannot do this because a mesh has no parameters.

### How precise are the edits?

Exact. Ask for 2 mm and the parameter changes by 2.000 mm. The compiled geometry is deterministic, so the same program always produces the same mesh.

### Can I undo an AI edit?

Yes. The previous version stays visible as a translucent ghost after each change; one click keeps or undoes it. The chat is also the history, so you can ask to go back to any earlier state.

### Is editing free?

No: typing a number in the viewer and undoing are free, but asking the AI for a change spends 3 credits for a design change or 2 for a small change, whichever model answers, or 1 for a quick edit that changes a size or a number. Downloads are included in every plan; without one, a download spends 4 credits and small fixes after it re-download free.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the most intuitive CAD for 3D printing, made for people who own a 3D printer and need a part that fits something they have: tap a face and type a size to shape it with simple tools, or describe it to the AI, on your phone or computer, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
