# How much does a custom 3D printed part really cost in 2026?

> Filament, electricity, printer wear and, the hidden one, design time. A realistic breakdown of what a custom part costs at home, and where AI CAD changes the math.

## Material

A 1 kg spool of PLA or PETG costs $15 to $25. A typical functional part (a bracket, a knob, a small enclosure) weighs 15 to 60 g, so $0.30 to $1.50 of plastic. Even a large organizer rarely passes $4.

## Electricity

A desktop FDM printer draws 60 to 150 W while printing. A three-hour print is roughly 0.3 kWh, or a few cents at residential rates.

## Printer wear

Nozzles, belts, bed sheets and the occasional hotend. Spread over the life of a $300 to $1,000 machine, most people land around $0.10 to $0.30 per print hour.

## The hidden cost: design time

This is where the numbers stop being cents. Modelling a knob with a D-shaft in a traditional CAD program is 20 to 60 minutes for someone who knows the tool, and an evening (or a weekend of tutorials) for someone who does not. At any reasonable value of your time, design dominates the bill for one-off parts.

## Buying vs printing

An OEM replacement knob costs $12 to $40 shipped, if it exists. A printed one costs about a dollar in materials plus your design time. The design time was the reason people kept buying knobs.

## Where AI CAD moves the needle

SpeakCAD turns design time into a description, a change and a few quick edits by chat, then a download: about 8 credits (3 for the part, 2 for a small change, 1 per quick edit, downloads included in every plan), or roughly $0.60 at the Pro rate. A full replacement part lands at roughly those credits + $0.50 material + $0.10 wear, and the second attempt after a fit check costs the material and, if you ask the AI for the fix instead of typing the number in the viewer, one request: re-downloads after small fixes are free.

## A realistic total

| Item | Traditional CAD | SpeakCAD |
|---|---|---|
| Design | 30–90 min of your time | About 10–15 min + about 8 credits |
| Material | $0.50 | $0.50 |
| Energy + wear | $0.40 | $0.40 |
| Second iteration | Design time again | Material, plus 1 or 2 credits if the AI makes the fix |

For anyone who is not a full-time CAD user, the design column is the whole story.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the most intuitive CAD for 3D printing, made for people who own a 3D printer and need a part that fits something they have: tap a face and type a size to shape it with simple tools, or describe it to the AI, on your phone or computer, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
