# How much does 3D printing software cost for a school? Free options, per-seat prices and a worked example

> What schools pay for CAD and slicing software in 2026: the free options, what per-seat plans include, and a worked example for a class of 25 on yearly seats.

A school printer needs two kinds of software: something to design the part, and a slicer that turns it into G-code for the printer. Much of it is free for education. The question is what the free tools leave out, and what is worth paying for.

## The free options

| Software | What it is | Price for schools | Runs on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tinkercad | Shape-based beginner CAD | Free | Browser on a computer or Chromebook |
| Onshape Education | Parametric CAD | Free for students and educators | Browser, Chromebooks included |
| Fusion (education) | Parametric CAD, CAM | Free for eligible students and educators | Windows, macOS |
| FreeCAD | Open-source parametric CAD | Free | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Cura | Desktop slicers | Free | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| SpeakCAD hand tools and online slicer | Browser CAD by tapping and typing, online slicer | Free on a free account | Browser on a computer, Chromebook, iPad or phone |

Free software has real costs that do not show up on an invoice: the hours students spend learning the interface before they make a working part, IT time to install and update desktop programs, and Chromebooks that cannot run them at all. On a managed Chromebook, the free list shrinks to the browser tools.

## What paying for software buys

A paid seat makes sense when it saves class time or does something the free tools do not. With SpeakCAD, the paid part is the AI: a student describes a part with its numbers, or sends a photo next to a ruler, and gets an editable model in minutes, then changes it by hand. For a class whose projects must fit something (an enclosure, a bracket, a replacement part), that is the difference between a design lesson and an interface lesson.

## What an Education seat includes

- 25 credits a month on the student's own account: 5 or 6 new AI parts with their small changes. A new part spends 4 credits on a plan with its first 3 small changes free, a design change 3, a small change 2, a quick edit 1.
- Every STL, 3MF and sliced G-code download included.
- The online slicer with OrcaSlicer profiles for 380+ printers, up to 60 files a day.
- The hand tools (hole, cut, add, extrude, text, round, fillet, shell and measure), free on any account anyway.
- Models that stay private unless the student publishes them.
- For the teacher: one invoice with the school's name, address and tax ID, each student's credits, number of models and last activity, seats added or removed any time with Stripe prorating, a new join link when needed.

Credits a student receives stay on their account if they leave the class.

## Prices by class size

$3 a seat a month, or $30 a seat a year (2 months free), taxes included. The teacher's own seat is one of the seats; a class starts at 2 seats and goes up to 300 without a quote.

| Seats | Monthly | Monthly × 12 | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $6 | $72 | $60 |
| 10 | $30 | $360 | $300 |
| 25 | $75 | $900 | $750 |
| 30 | $90 | $1,080 | $900 |
| 120 | $360 | $4,320 | $3,600 |

## A worked example: one teacher and 24 students

A teacher with 24 students buys 25 seats, the teacher's included.

1. **Seats:** 25 × $30 a year = **$750 a year**, taxes included.
2. **Compared with monthly:** 25 × $3 × 12 = $900, so yearly saves $150.
3. **Credits:** 25 seats × 25 credits = 625 credits a month across the class, each student's on their own account.
4. **What a student can do in a month:** 5 or 6 new AI parts with their small changes, or many more parts shaped by hand, which spend nothing. A small change past the first 3 spends 2 credits, a quick size change 1 credit, a design change 3 credits.
5. **Mid-year changes:** two students join in January; the teacher adds two seats and Stripe charges only the rest of the year for them.

If a class only runs a design unit for part of the year, monthly seats for those months can cost less than a year: the table above gives both.

## Paying for it

The teacher, the department or the school applies for the class [in SpeakCAD](https://app.speakcad.com/team) (we check that it is a school, usually within a day) and then pays through Stripe; the invoice carries the school's details for the accounts office. Students join with the class link or an e-mailed invitation and sign up with any e-mail address, so no school e-mail system is involved. Above 300 seats, [get in touch](/contact).

## The short version

Use the free tools where they fit: Tinkercad for first shapes, Onshape or Fusion for students going into engineering, a desktop slicer where it installs. Pay for seats when the class needs functional parts with real dimensions on Chromebooks without a CAD course first. [Education seats](/education) has the details, and the [universities page](/education/universities) covers labs and courses.

## FAQ

### Is there free 3D printing software for schools?

Yes. Tinkercad is free, Onshape and Fusion are free for students and educators, FreeCAD and the desktop slicers are free, and SpeakCAD's hand tools and online slicer are free on a free account. What the free options leave out is a quick route to a functional part for students who have never used CAD.

### How much does SpeakCAD cost for a class?

$3 per seat a month or $30 per seat a year, taxes included, from 2 seats. A teacher and 24 students on yearly seats is $750 a year. Each seat gets 25 credits a month and every download included.

### Do students need a school e-mail address?

No. Students join the class with the teacher's link or an e-mailed invitation and sign up with any e-mail address.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the most intuitive CAD for 3D printing, made for people who own a 3D printer and need a part that fits something they have: tap a face and type a size to shape it with simple tools, or describe it to the AI, on your phone or computer, and download a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
