# MCP servers for 3D printing and CAD in 2026: what each one does

> Remote and local MCP servers for 3D printing: SpeakCAD, kernelCAD, Fusion, Onshape, FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, Blender, Meshy, OctoEverywhere. Checked Oct 2026.

**Checked on 1 October 2026** against each project's README, official documentation and directory listing. GitHub star counts are rounded and move every week. SpeakCAD is our product, so weigh this page accordingly and follow the links.

An MCP server gives ChatGPT, Claude or a coding agent a set of tools. For 3D printing, those tools fall into five jobs: designing the part, working in a CAD program you already use, making organic meshes, slicing, and running the printer. Few servers do more than one, and the biggest difference between them is where they run: on a web address you paste into the assistant, or on your own computer next to a desktop program.

## The short answer

- **Design a printable part from the chat, nothing to install:** SpeakCAD (STL, 3MF and G-code for 380+ printers), kernelCAD (B-rep CAD with STEP export), OwlCAD (many export formats, Pro plan).
- **Drive the CAD program you already use:** Autodesk's Fusion MCP, Onshape's FeatureScript MCP Server, FreeCAD MCP, Zoo's MCP server, the OpenSCAD MCP servers.
- **Figurines and organic shapes:** Blender MCP, Meshy, Tripo.
- **Slice a file for your printer:** SpeakCAD Slicer (remote, no sign-in), or the local printer servers below that call a slicer installed on your computer.
- **Watch and control the printer:** OctoEverywhere (hosted), mcp-3d-printer-server, bambu-printer-mcp, Kiln.

## Design a part from the chat (remote, nothing to install)

| Server | What it does | Sign-in | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| [SpeakCAD](/mcp-server) | Designs functional parts with its own CAD AI from a description with measurements, shows them in 3D in the chat, changes them in words | SpeakCAD account (OAuth) | STL, 3MF, G-code sliced for 380+ printers |
| **kernelCAD** | Parametric B-rep CAD on the OpenCascade kernel, editable .kcad.ts source, in-chat 3D viewer in ChatGPT | Required | STEP, STL |
| [OwlCAD](https://owlcad.com/mcp-server) | 29 tools for CAD modelling | Pro plan | STL, 3MF, OBJ, DXF, SVG, STEP |

- **SpeakCAD** is built for printed functional parts: enclosures, brackets, mounts, adapters. It applies FDM rules (walls, clearances, a flat base), slices with each printer's OrcaSlicer profile and keeps every part in your SpeakCAD account for the full editor. Address: `https://speakcad.com/api/mcp`. It works as a [Claude connector](/claude-connector) and a [ChatGPT plugin](/chatgpt-plugin); requests and downloads spend SpeakCAD credits (2 credits and 10 credits).
- **kernelCAD** is listed in Claude's connectors directory (Community) and in ChatGPT's plugin directory. Pick it when you need STEP for a CAD workflow or machining; SpeakCAD exports no STEP.
- **OwlCAD** runs at a public MCP address and needs its Pro plan; its page does not mention slicing.

## Drive the CAD program you already use

| Server | Who makes it | Runs | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| [Fusion MCP](https://help.autodesk.com/view/ADSKMCP/ENU/) | Autodesk (official) | Locally, next to Fusion | Fusion running with its MCP server switched on; Claude Desktop |
| [FeatureScript MCP Server](https://www.onshape.com/en/blog/featurescript-mcp-server-enables-text-code-cad) | Onshape Labs (official, early access) | Hosted | An Onshape account and an App Store subscription |
| [freecad-mcp](https://github.com/neka-nat/freecad-mcp) | Community, about 2,600 stars, MIT | Locally | FreeCAD with its add-on and RPC server |
| [Zoo MCP](https://github.com/KittyCAD/mcp) | Zoo (official) | Locally | A Zoo API token; usage billed as Zoo API usage |
| [OpenSCAD-MCP-Server](https://github.com/jhacksman/OpenSCAD-MCP-Server), [openscad-mcp](https://github.com/RobertCoop/openscad-mcp) | Community, MIT | Locally | OpenSCAD and Python |

These servers make the assistant a pair of hands inside your own CAD tool. Fusion's is listed in Claude's directory as a local extension for Claude Desktop. Onshape's writes FeatureScript for custom features rather than drawing geometry directly. Zoo's works in its KCL language. The FreeCAD and OpenSCAD servers render on your machine and can return previews; one of the OpenSCAD servers also checks clearances and printability.

Two cautions from their own READMEs: tools such as FreeCAD's `execute_code` run code the model writes inside the program, and the jhacksman OpenSCAD server says it has no sandbox. Run them on a machine you are comfortable with.

## Figurines and organic shapes

- [Blender MCP](https://github.com/ahujasid/blender-mcp) (community, about 30,000 stars) and Blender's own [Blender Lab MCP server](https://www.blender.org/lab/mcp-server/) (Blender 5.1+, listed in Claude's directory as a local extension) drive Blender from the chat. Both warn that they execute model-written code. Blender is a mesh modeller: right for sculpted and organic shapes, not for a bracket that must fit a 22 mm pipe.
- [Meshy](https://www.meshy.ai/mcp) has an official MCP server that runs locally with an API key (Pro plan or above), with printability checks, repair and multicolour 3MF, and a Meshy plugin in ChatGPT's directory.
- **Tripo 3D** has a ChatGPT plugin that exports STL and 3MF; its MCP server is marked alpha and needs Blender.

For the difference between these mesh generators and CAD that keeps exact millimetres, see [the best AI tools for 3D printing](/best-ai-cad-for-3d-printing).

## Slice a file for your printer

- [SpeakCAD Slicer](/guides/slice-from-chatgpt-or-claude): remote, no sign-in, listed in Claude's connectors directory. The assistant finds your printer among 380+, checks the settings against its OrcaSlicer profile and opens the slicer in the chat; you drop the file there. 3 free slices a day in Claude and ChatGPT without an account, then a free SpeakCAD account. Address: `https://speakcad.com/api/mcp/slicer`.
- The local printer servers below slice too, by calling PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio or CuraEngine installed on your computer.

## Watch and control the printer

| Server | Runs | Printers | What it can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| [OctoEverywhere](https://github.com/OctoEverywhere/mcp) | Hosted, free, access token; also a ChatGPT plugin | OctoPrint, Klipper, Bambu Lab, Creality, Prusa, Anycubic, Elegoo | Status, webcam snapshots, pause, resume, cancel |
| [mcp-3d-printer-server](https://github.com/DMontgomery40/mcp-3D-printer-server) | Locally, GPL-2.0 | OctoPrint, Klipper/Moonraker, Duet, Repetier, PrusaLink, Creality, Bambu | Print control with a confirmation step for heating and printing, STL tools, slicing |
| [bambu-printer-mcp](https://github.com/DMontgomery40/bambu-printer-mcp) | Locally, GPL-2.0 | Bambu Lab in LAN or Developer Mode | Print control, AMS, slicing through Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer |
| [Kiln](https://github.com/codeofaxel/Kiln) | Locally, AGPL-3.0, free and paid tiers | OctoPrint, Moonraker, Bambu, PrusaLink, Elegoo, Duet, USB | Print control, slicing, model search |

We found no official MCP server from Bambu Lab, Prusa or the Klipper project on the day we checked. Keep a human between a chat message and a heated nozzle: leave the confirmations on.

## Finding models

We found no first-party MCP server for Thingiverse, Printables or MakerWorld on 1 October 2026; the community servers that exist scrape or wrap their sites. SpeakCAD's `search_models` searches its own library of generate-to-fit parts and its maker marketplace.

## Remote or local?

- **Remote** (SpeakCAD, kernelCAD, OwlCAD, Onshape, OctoEverywhere): paste an address or pick the directory listing, sign in, and it works in ChatGPT and Claude on the web, the desktop and the phone.
- **Local** (Fusion, FreeCAD, OpenSCAD, Zoo, Blender, the printer servers): runs on your computer, usually with Claude Desktop, Claude Code or another desktop client, and can reach the programs and the printer on your network.

## How to choose

1. **You want the printed part, not a CAD session:** a remote design server. For functional FDM parts and G-code, [SpeakCAD](/mcp-server); for STEP, kernelCAD.
2. **You live in Fusion, Onshape or FreeCAD:** that program's server, so the result stays in your own files.
3. **It is a figurine:** Meshy, Tripo or Blender.
4. **The file exists and needs G-code:** SpeakCAD Slicer in the chat, or a local printer server if you want the assistant to start the print too.

## FAQ

### What is the best MCP server for 3D printing?

It depends on the job. To get a printable functional part from ChatGPT or Claude with nothing to install, a remote design server: SpeakCAD returns STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for 380+ printers, kernelCAD returns STEP and STL. To work inside Fusion, Onshape or FreeCAD, that program's own server. For figurines, Meshy, Tripo or Blender. To control a printer, OctoEverywhere or a local server such as mcp-3d-printer-server.

### Is there an official Fusion 360 or Onshape MCP server?

Yes. Autodesk documents an official Fusion MCP server that runs locally next to Fusion (and appears in Claude's directory as a local extension), and Onshape Labs announced a hosted FeatureScript MCP Server in August 2026, in early access for Onshape subscribers.

### Can an MCP server send a print to my 3D printer?

Yes, several can: OctoEverywhere's hosted server and local servers such as mcp-3d-printer-server, bambu-printer-mcp and Kiln talk to OctoPrint, Klipper, PrusaLink or Bambu Lab printers. SpeakCAD stops at the file: it designs and slices, and you send the G-code to the printer.

## About SpeakCAD

SpeakCAD is the mobile-first AI 3D editor for 3D printing: describe a part in plain English on your phone or computer and get an instant, print-ready STL or 3MF, or G-code already sliced for your printer.

SpeakCAD works inside ChatGPT and Claude as a plugin (an MCP server): ask the assistant for a part with its measurements and SpeakCAD's own CAD AI designs it, shows it in 3D in the chat and hands over a print-ready STL, 3MF or G-code sliced for your printer.
