# The best 3D printers for small spaces: apartments, desks and shared rooms

> Quiet desk picks (A1 mini, Prusa MINI) and enclosed, filtered picks for a shared room (Centauri Carbon, Adventurer 5M Pro, P1S). Noise, footprint, fumes.

## The short answer

For a desk in a room you also work or sleep in, the [Bambu Lab A1 mini](/printers/bambu-lab-a1-mini) and the [Prusa MINI](/printers/prusa-mini) are among the quietest small printers on sale and print PLA and PETG without fuss. For a shared room, or a home with children and pets, an enclosed printer keeps the hot parts behind a door and the smell behind a filter: the [Elegoo Centauri Carbon](/printers/elegoo-centauri-carbon) for the price, the [Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro](/printers/flashforge-adventurer-5m) for its HEPA and carbon filter, the [Bambu Lab P1S](/printers/bambu-lab-p1s) for the ecosystem and multi-colour. The trade in every case is bed size against box size: the small quiet machines print 180 mm, the enclosed ones 220 to 256 mm in a bigger cabinet.

## The table

| Printer | Type | Bed (mm) | Enclosed | Filter | Noise | Launch price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Bambu Lab A1 mini](/printers/bambu-lab-a1-mini) | Open bed slinger | 180 x 180 x 180 | No | No | Among the quietest small printers | $299 |
| [Prusa MINI](/printers/prusa-mini) | Open bed slinger | 180 x 180 x 180 | No | No | Among the quietest small printers | Around $400 as a kit |
| [Elegoo Centauri Carbon](/printers/elegoo-centauri-carbon) | Enclosed CoreXY | 256 x 256 x 256 | Yes | Air filter | Quiet-ish at moderate speeds, fans audible | $299 |
| [Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro](/printers/flashforge-adventurer-5m) | Enclosed CoreXY | 220 x 220 x 220 | Yes | HEPA and carbon | Enclosed, fans audible | Around $450 to $500 |
| [Bambu Lab P1S](/printers/bambu-lab-p1s) | Enclosed CoreXY | 256 x 256 x 250 | Yes | Activated carbon | Enclosed, fans audible | $699 |

Prices moved in 2025 and vary by region, so check each maker's store. Bed sizes are from the OrcaSlicer profiles.

## Noise: what actually makes the sound

Three things: motors and belts at speed, the part-cooling and electronics fans, and the bed thumping back and forth on a bed slinger. Silent stepper drivers have removed most of the motor whine on printers sold since 2023, which leaves the fans and the moving bed. An open bed slinger puts all of it in the room; an enclosed CoreXY keeps the bed still and the motion behind panels, so the fans dominate and the sound is a steady hum rather than a rhythm. The A1 mini and the Prusa MINI are the exceptions on the open side: light beds and small motors make them among the quietest small printers made.

Two practical notes. Every printer has a slower setting, and SpeakCAD's download dialog has a Quiet speed that slows walls and infill for a night print. And the desk matters as much as the printer: a hollow desk is a soundboard, and a paving slab on a foam mat under the machine, or [TPU riser feet](/blog/3d-printer-upgrades-you-can-print-yourself), removes most of the thump.

## Footprint: the bed slinger tax

A bed slinger moves its bed forwards and backwards, so the machine needs its bed's travel free behind it and in front of it: the desk footprint is much deeper than the frame in the photo, with the bed sticking out the back on the first layer and out the front on the last. It also needs its spool holder, usually on top or behind. A CoreXY box is the size of its case plus the door swing at the front and the spool or filament box on the back or on top. On a narrow desk or a shelf, that is often the difference between fitting and not.

The A1 mini and the MINI are small enough that even with the travel counted they fit on half a desk. Add an AMS lite to the A1 mini and it needs a second footprint beside or behind the printer, since the AMS lite is an open four-spool unit, not a box on top. The P1S with an AMS stacks the AMS on the lid, which trades desk space for height, and the [AMS top riser frame](/library/bambu-lab-p1s-ams-top-riser-frame) adds a little more when you prop the lid for PLA.

## Fumes: PLA is mild, ABS is not

PLA smells faintly sweet and PETG hardly at all; both are fine in a lived-in room with a window that opens. ABS and ASA release styrene and belong in an enclosure with a filter in a room you can ventilate, which in a small flat usually means not printing them at all. The filter on the P1S is activated carbon, the Centauri Carbon has an air filter, and the Adventurer 5M Pro has both HEPA and carbon. None replaces a window; all of them make an enclosed machine in a shared room pleasant rather than tolerable. The [enclosed vs open explainer](/blog/enclosed-vs-open-3d-printer) has the detail; the short version for small spaces is: print PLA and PETG, and buy the enclosure for the door, not for ABS.

## Children and pets: the door is the feature

A nozzle above 200 °C, a bed at 60 °C and a bed that slides at hand height are the risk on an open printer, and a cat on a warm bed is the classic way a print fails. An enclosed printer puts all of it behind a door and a lid. All three enclosed picks have a camera, so you can check on the print from another room instead of opening the door to look.

## The picks

### Bambu Lab A1 mini: the desk printer

180 x 180 x 180 mm, very quiet, auto bed levelling, vibration and flow calibration, a camera, and the AMS lite option for four colours. Launched at $299. For: a desk in a bedroom or a study, PLA and PETG, someone who wants the printer to behave like an appliance. You give up: the enclosure, 256 mm parts and an open ecosystem, and the AMS lite needs its own space. See [A1 mini vs Prusa MINI](/printers/compare/bambu-lab-a1-mini-vs-prusa-mini).

### Prusa MINI: the quiet open-source one

The same bed size, quiet, compact, open source, kit or assembled, with input shaping added by a firmware update. Launched around $400 as a kit. For: someone who wants to understand and maintain their printer, PrusaLink from a phone browser, no cloud dependence. You give up: the Bowden extruder makes TPU harder, there is no camera and no multi-colour option, and the bed is 180 mm.

### Elegoo Centauri Carbon: an enclosure for the price of an open printer

Enclosed CoreXY, 256 x 256 x 256 mm, hardened nozzle and gears, camera, air filter, touchscreen. Launched at $299. For: a shared room where the door matters and the budget is tight, and anyone who might try ASA later. You give up: a single nozzle with no multi-colour box at launch, Wi-Fi through ElegooSlicer on a computer rather than a phone page, and a bigger box than the two above. Against the [P1S](/printers/compare/bambu-lab-p1s-vs-elegoo-centauri-carbon) it is the value choice.

### Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro: the filtered one

Enclosed CoreXY, 220 x 220 x 220 mm, HEPA and carbon filter, camera, chamber fan, quick-swap nozzles. Launched around $450 to $500. For: a bedroom or a child's room, where the filter and the door are the whole point. You give up: the smallest bed of the enclosed three, and a phone workflow that runs through Flashforge's app. See [Adventurer 5M vs A1 mini](/printers/compare/flashforge-adventurer-5m-vs-bambu-lab-a1-mini).

### Bambu Lab P1S: the enclosed all-rounder

Enclosed CoreXY, 256 x 256 x 250 mm in the profile, activated-carbon filter, auxiliary cooling fan, camera, AMS for four to sixteen colours. Launched at $699. For: someone who wants one printer for years, multi-colour, and the most polished software. You give up: a small non-touch screen, a low-frame-rate camera, the AMS adding height on top, and a closed ecosystem. [P1S vs X1 Carbon](/printers/compare/bambu-lab-p1s-vs-x1-carbon) covers the step up.

## What to check in your room

1. Measure the space with the bed slinger's travel counted, or the CoreXY's door swing and spool. A tape measure and the maker's dimensions page settle it.
2. Decide where the spool lives: on top (height), behind (depth) or in a drybox beside the printer (width).
3. Put the printer on something solid, not a hollow desk or a wobbly shelf.
4. Plan the night print: quiet speed, a room with a door, a camera.
5. Print PLA and PETG only, unless the room has ventilation you would be happy to run for hours.

## The parts that fit the space

Whichever printer you pick, it is one of the 380+ in [SpeakCAD's slicer catalog](/printers), so the first custom part is a description away: describe it with millimetres in the browser on a phone or a computer, check it on a virtual bed the size of that printer's (a useful check on a 180 mm machine), and download G-code sliced with the printer's official profile (a .gcode.3mf for Bambu Lab), or the STL or 3MF for your own slicer. The [live demo](/demo) is free and needs no account, with 3 AI edits of a real part; your own parts use credits, from $5 once with no subscription. The [first-week plan](/blog/first-week-with-a-new-3d-printer) fits a small bed.

## Where that leaves you

On a desk, the A1 mini or the Prusa MINI. In a shared room, the Centauri Carbon for the price, the Adventurer 5M Pro for the filter, the P1S for the ecosystem. Keep the material to PLA and PETG, put the machine on something solid, and print the riser feet first.

## Prompts to try

- Four riser feet for a small printer with 25 mm round rubber feet: 40 mm pads, 20 mm tall, a 26 mm pocket 5 mm deep, printed in TPU to damp vibration on a desk. ## FAQ

### What is the quietest 3D printer for a bedroom?

Among small printers, the Bambu Lab A1 mini and the Prusa MINI: light beds, small motors and silent drivers. Enclosed CoreXY machines such as the P1S or Centauri Carbon are a steady fan hum behind panels rather than a thump. Whatever you pick, a slab and a foam mat under it matter as much as the printer.

### Do I need an enclosure to print PLA at home?

No. PLA and PETG print fine on an open printer and smell little. In a small space, buy an enclosure for the door (children, pets, a still bed) rather than for the material, and leave ABS and ASA to rooms you can ventilate for hours.

### How much space does a 3D printer need?

More than the frame suggests for a bed slinger, because the bed travels forwards and backwards beyond the frame and the spool sits on top or behind. A CoreXY box needs its case, the door swing and the spool. Measure with the travel and the door counted, from the maker's dimensions page.

### Is a 3D printer safe around children and pets?

An open printer has a nozzle above 200 °C, a bed at 60 °C and a moving bed at hand height, so it needs a room with a door or a closed lid over it. An enclosed printer puts all of that behind a door, and a camera lets you check without opening it.
